13th International West-East Dental Conference

Medical University of Warsaw’s 13th International West-East Dental Conference took place on 12 April. The event was an opportunity for students to learn from exceptional academics and professionals from Poland and abroad about the latest achievements and current issues in the field of dentistry. HM Prof. Mirosław Wielgoś, Rector of Medical University of Warsaw (MUW) accepted to be patron of the Conference.

Prof. Elżbieta Mierzwińska-Nastalska, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and Chair of the Organizing Committee, welcomed all the guests and participants. Representing MUW was the Rector; Deputy Rector for Student Affairs and Education, Prof. Barbara Górnicka; Deputy Rector for Science and Technology Transfer, Prof. Jadwiga Turło; Dean of I Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Paweł Włodarski; Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Prof. Piotr Wroczyński; and, Dean of the Center for Postgraduate Education, Prof. Bolesław Samoliński.  

Guests included Dr. Łukasz Jankowski, President of the Regional Medical Chamber in Warsaw, Dr. Dariusz Paluszek, Head of the Committee of Dentists at the Supreme Medical Chamber, Mr. Janusz Szulik, CEO of INTER Polska Insurance Company, and Mr. Marian Rogowski, CEO of MRD based in Frankfurt and longtime supporter of the conference.

The audience was made up of students, doctoral students, academic teachers, interns and doctors from all over Poland and from abroad.

In her opening remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Prof. Elżbieta Mierzwińska-Nastalska, indicated that Prof. Janusz Piekarczyk, a former Rector of MUW, inititated the first West-East Dental Conference back in 2006.  The Dean expressed her pride in the fact that the Conference has become a permanent position in the University’s calendar of events.

Rector Wielgoś officially opened the Conference as its patron. He spoke about the opening of MUW’s University Dental Center in a newly constructed building this fall. The Rector explained that the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry will finally have the facilities to achieve its full potential in scientific and clinical research as well as in teaching and training. Rector Wielgoś commended the organizers and wished everyone fruitful discussion and a pleasant stay in Warsaw.

The Conference had two scientific sessions with guest speakers from Poland and abroad.

The first session was chaired by Prof. Andrzej Wojtowicz and Paweł Zawadzki, PhD and the following presentations were delivered:

Prof. Henrik Dommisch, "Regenerative periodontal therapy - concepts and evidence", Department of Periodontology and Synoptic Dentistry, Charité – Universitätmedizin, Berlin

The second session was chaired by Izabela Strużycka, PhD, and Jolanta Kostrzewa-Janicka, PhD and the following presentations were delivered:

The Conference was co-organized by the Regional Medical Chamber in Warsaw; MRD; INTER Polska Insurance Company, Polish Dental Student’s Society Warsaw Branch; and Pierre Fauchard Academy, Polish Section.
